Telgua Case Study
Problem
Telecomunicaciones de Guatemala (Telgua), based in Guatemala City, is the leading telecommunications company in Guatemala, providing wireless, internet, cable television, paging, data transmission and other services. Telgua in 2009 purchased the HP Route Analytics Management Software (RAMS, OEM from Packet Design). The package included multiple elements and devices that required installation, software configuration and verification of correct functioning and integration, as well as administrator and user training on the product. Telgua staff lacked background and experience with the new product and required the services of a knowledgeable consulting company.
Background
The Guatemalan Congress passed legislation in 1996 calling for the privatization of Guatel, the government-owned telecommunications company. That resulted in the creation of Telgua in 1998 through a majority ownership purchase of the government company by Luca, S.A., a Guatemalan-Central American group. In 2000 it joined the Mexican telecom group, American Movil, the largest corporation in Latin America and fourth largest mobile phone network operator in the world. American Movil provides services to more than 182 million wireless subscribers throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. As part of American Movil, Telgua in 2006 rebranded its wireless products PCS Digital and Alo de PCS to the Claro product name. Telgua also owns SERCOM (Servicios de Comunicaciones Personales Inalambricas), a 3G wireless phone service provider in Guatemala. It now has more than 5.2 million subscribers in 47 cities in Guatemala.
The FTS Solution
Implementing HP Route Analytics Management Software (RAMS) provided Telgua with real-time visibility and automated tracking of the dynamic routing operation of its network. RAMS enables fast identification and resolution of network problems, including detection and isolation of root causes of layer 3 network instabilities and anomalies. It allows validation of network operation after maintenance activities and simulation and modeling for planning changes in network design. Network management typically experiences reduced downtime and lower operational costs thanks to rapid problem resolution.
Packet Design, OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) for the project, is the leading supplier of network appliances that provide routing-layer (layer 3) visibility into IP networks. Packet Design pioneered the field of route analytics and its products are used to manage networks in hundreds of organizations, including many of the world's largest service providers, global commercial enterprises, government agencies and educational institutions.
Implementation of this solution was provided by FedTech Services. Principals from the company were engaged to provide a solution comprised of a modeling engine, route recorder, flow recorder and flow analyzer. Each element was a separate device. FTS installed the hardware, performed RAMS software configuration, verified correct function of the software, assisted with the HP Open View Integration and provided administrator and user training on the product. The project was completed successfully, providing Telgua with the ability to verify, monitor and optimize routing, as well as to more rapidly detect, diagnose and resolve IP network problems.
